“The installation of Elsewhere has a churchlike quality and is a meditative exhibition which hopefully induces a sense of calm and provides an occasion for contemplation. The work has a spiritual dimension and seems to have resonance with people who are struggling, grieving or simply feeling lonely or isolated. Unintentionally, of course, it seems kind of appropriate at this challenging time, and I hope it can provide some healing even in a very small way. I sincerely hope that some of you will get the opportunity to visit the show but if not, we will do our best to share the work online. Stay safe everyone and support each-other.”

ヒノギャラリーでは 2020 年 4 月 6 日 ( 月 ) より「ティム・ヘミングトン “Elsewhere”」を開催いたします。
今回発表するシリーズ “Elsewhere” は、ヘミングトンの制作において常に興味の対象にある相対する二項の「はざま」へのア プローチから生まれた作品といえるかもしれません。 作家が絶えず持ち続けるこの領域への興味は、手法は異なりますが、前回 2017 年の弊廊での個展で発表した “Paradox” シ リーズからもうかがうことができます。偶然と必然、作為と無作為、混沌と秩序、それら二極構造を意識し生成されたのが “Paradox” シリーズですが、その境界にさらに踏み込み、より曖昧な領域への働きかけによってもたらされたのが今回の “Elsewhere” シリーズです。
ヘミングトンがアプローチする「はざま」には、絵画についていえば抽象と具象、イリュージョンと実在性、そして、より俯 瞰的に捉えるならば、近年身近な体験を通し作家の中でより意識的になった記憶や時間、存在といった概念も含まれます。 それらの境界は非常に不確かなもので、しかし、その掴みとれない原理のなかにこそ私たちは生き、生かされているという ことをヘミングトンの作品は訴えかけます。
本展の主となる作品は、メインのキャンバスを壁面に、それに付随するパネルを床に配置し、薄めの油彩を浸した刷毛を固 定位置から振りかざし、その重なりによってつくられたもの、一方で、溶剤によって背景の色を融解させながらつくられた ものがあり、展示の際も制作時と同様に 2 点一対で設置されます。浮かび上がるしぶきの蓄積は記憶や時間の一過性と持続性、 その両方を示唆し、モノクロームで構成された画面からは、陰と陽という不離一体の関係を見る者に印象づけ、二項間にあ る定義し得ない領域の視覚化を試みています。 また、ヒューマンスケールに基づいたパネルは、そのフォルムからも壁のキャンバスはドアを、フロアパネルはドアステッ プを想起させるつくりになっており、身体に作用することから、見る者をほかのどこか(Elsewhere)へと誘う扉、「はざま」 として捉えることができます。このとき主体として自立した絵画は一転、客体に変わり、展示はたちまちインスタレーショ ンへと転化します。
ヒノギャラリーでは 3 年振りとなるヘミングトンの個展。個として、また空間全体として作品をご覧いただいたとき、作家 が探り当てようと試みる「はざま」を体験いただけるかもしれません。是非ご高覧くださいませ。

Hino gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition entitled “Elsewhere” by Tim Hemington from Monday, April 6th, 2020.
Tim Hemington’ s latest series of paintings entitled “Elsewhere” reflects his long-term inquiry into the relationship of two contrasting events or actions, that are manifested in the finished works that occupy an “in between” space: one that is usually associated with other media.
This specific interest provided an anchor for the content of his previous series entitled “Paradox” , which was showcased in his solo exhibition at Hino gallery in 2017. It could be said that “Paradox” was generated from a balanced equation of binary oppositions: such as the predictable and the unpredictable, the intentional and the unintentional, and order and chaos. Whereas “Elsewhere” has been created by the artist’ s focus on boundaries and provides a further step into these undefined areas.
In regard to the paintings, this “in between” that Hemington is continuously exploring, is a dividing point between abstraction and figuration, and perhaps illusion and facticity, but it also includes a sense of memory, time and existence that the artist has become more conscious of through his familiar experiences in recent years. Hemington’ s work exposes the difficulties when attempting to define boundaries but, at the same time, suggests that we are all ultimately living and able to live despite the impossibility of any existential absolutes.
Many of the works are produced by hanging a main vertical panel on the wall and placing an accompanying panel on the floor, then applying a different number of applications of splattered thin oil paint from a fixed position, or conversely in the darker works, by applying thinners to remove the grounds. They are installed in the exhibition in the same way as they were produced in the studio. These accumulated splashed or thrown applications allow an emergence on the canvas that suggests both temporariness and continuousness of memory or time, and Hemington attempts to visualize the undefinable “in betweeness” of two things by using a monochromatic light and dark palette, that gives the viewer a sense of a yin and yang relationship, which is practically inseparable.
The physical scale of the panels reflects an average human scale. The wall panel invokes a feeling of a door or entrance while the floor panel suggests a step, and this creates a physical dynamic between the viewer and the work. The viewer should feel a sense of physical relationship with the space and the works and should perceive the works as portholes perhaps: a lure into “Elsewhere” that could be “in between.” In this instance, the paintings that had existed as subjects turn into objects and create an installation like space.

A variety of perceivable forms emerge from the complexity of Tim Hemington’s oil paintings. Sometimes they appear to reference landscape from aerial viewpoints and sometimes, human bodies or birds in flight, but no specific readings are defined, as the final forms are results of a series of controlled accidents, which are triggered by material phenomena. The processes often generate unpredictable results that even surprise the artist and create wild beauty despite apparent chaos. In contrast, the white/grey grounds executed with precise brush strokes somehow crop the figures and bring order, endowing the paintings with a sense of silence and peace. Nature and humanity co-exist in Hemington’s paintings: they present a balanced equation of order and chaos.
Tim Hemington went to Cheshire School of Art and then did his BFA at the Ruskin School of Art, University of Oxford. His practice is informed by diligent study of classical techniques fused with experimental contemporary approaches to the medium of painting that he first developed as an art student. He gained recognition exhibiting widely in Europe. Due to his relocation to Japan in 2006, he temporarily retreated from exhibiting publicly but never stopped working in the studio. “Paradox” is his first major solo show in Japan. We hope you will come and look closely at Hemington’s paintings, which now incorporate a Japanese aesthetic and spirituality that is coupled with artistic western painterly methodology.

より、ティム・ヘミングトン、アーウィン・リーグル、多和圭三、国内外 3 作家によるグ ループ展《GRAVITAS》を開催いたします。 "Gravitas"(グラビタス)とは、ラテン語に由来する言葉で、英語では 'high seriousness' や 'a very serious quality or manner' などと定義されています。日本語では「厳粛さ」「威厳」「重々しさ」や「生真面目さ」といった意味で訳され、また、ラテン語本来 の意味である 'gravity' 「重力」 から 'weight' や 'heaviness' といった「重さ」を表す言葉として用いられることもあります。 今回取り上げる 3 名は、それぞれ異なる国籍、文化的背景、表現方法を持つアーティストですが、制作に対する姿勢や作品の 捉え方には共通する点が多く、そのひとつであり最大の接点として、素材に主体をおいた制作スタイルが挙げられます。扱う 素材の特性を熟知し、それらと根気よく対話を重ねる、その真摯な態度は彼らの作品からも瞭然と見て取れます。 創作は常に素材とのやりとりにゆだねられるため、結果として残ったものがすなわち彼らの作品ということになります。それ は意図してうみだされるものではなく、素材との対話の中で見つけだされるもので、そのプロセスは時に作家に困難を強いり ますが、また同時に至上の悦楽を与えるものでもあります。そのことは作品に残された軌跡(素材と作家のダイアローグ)か ら鑑賞者である私たちもまた確認することができ、同時にそれは、作家がいかにそこに至るまでの過程や行為に重きを置いて いたのかを示唆するものでもあります。彼らの表現は一見自由なように見えますが、実はある意味とても人為的で、いわば前 意識的コントロールのもと、操られたカオスによって導きだされているような、そんな印象を受けます。これは不覊奔放な創 作では起こり得ず、作り手に技術的な土台、しっかりとした基礎があり、加えてこれまでに育んできた素材との関係があるか らこそ、発揮される力のように感じます。 今回ティム・ヘミングトンの作品は弊廊では初の展示となります。アーウィン・リーグルの作品は新作を一点と弊廊コレクショ ンよりブロンズ作品を、多和圭三作品は東京での未発表作を含む小品数点を展示いたします。奇抜さや派手さはないものの、 彼らの作品には重厚で安定した存在感があり、空間を静謐で心地よいものへと変容させる力があります。是非その空間で、今 度は皆様が作品との対話をお楽しみいただければと思います。 イギリス人であるティム・ヘミングトン(b. 1968)は、オクスフォード大学美術科にて絵画を専攻、そこで古典的な技法から 現代的表現に至るまで絵画の基礎を学ぶ。ドイツ人であるアーウィン・リーグル(b. 1954)は木彫専門の学校を経、ミュンヘ ン美術院に進学し造形制作における素地を築いた。多和圭三(b. 1952)もまた、日本大学芸術学部にて彫刻、特に専攻とした 鉄における見地を広げ、その基礎を確立した。
GRAVITAS June 20 - July 16, 2016
Hino gallery is pleased to present a group exhibition entitled "Gravitas", which comprises of work of three international artists, Tim Hemington, Erwin Legl and Keizo Tawa. The exhibition title derives from Latin and in English means 'high seriousness' or 'a very serious quality or manner'. It can also be translated more simply as 'weight' or 'heaviness' but has none of the negative associations of the word 'Gravity'. Despite their different nationalities and cultural backgrounds the artists presented here have several things in common relating to their attitudes and approaches towards making work and how it is perceived. One of the most obvious connections is that they place a great deal of importance on the inherent nature and qualities of their chosen materials. They are all well versed in the exploration of their mediums and relentlessly explore material possibilities. Although chance never fully presides, the results (the works in their "finished" states) are the manifestation of process and material exploration, and the forms are “found” rather than preconceived. This presents the artists with formidable challenges but when successful the work can be extraordinarily gratifying and we, the viewers, can also somehow experience a comparable dialogue with their work afterwards. The finished works are evidence of the process and clearly the journey is as important, if not more so, than the destination. It seems there is a limitless freedom of creation but perhaps this is misleading. It can be said that their works are produced with "uncontrolled control", or "controlled chaos". This is clearly not lawless creation as it is facilitated by the artists’ foundation of techniques, processes, content and contextual narrative that they have developed over time. For Gravitas we will show paintings by Hemington for the first time. We will also show a bronze sculpture by Legl from our private collection and one from his most recent work and a selection of small-scale work, which includes a piece that has never been shown in Tokyo before, by Tawa. The works included have a strong sense of presence and force that transforms the space into a tangibly still and meditative place. We invite you to experience Gravitas and to enjoy a contemplative dialogue with the work. Tim Hemington (UK, b. 1968) studied painting at Oxford University where he learnt to combine classical techniques with a contemporary approach. Erwin Legl (Germany, b. 1954) trained in wood sculpture at a vocational school then developed his practice at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich. Keizo Tawa (Japan, b. 1952) studied at Nihon University College of Art and specializes in iron sculpture.
